I got up Saturday morning and as usual I walked into my office and turned on the computer first thing. Then I put the coffee on and headed to the bathroom to clean up for the start of my day.

I was going to enjoy my Saturday online looking online for the muskie lures I want for 2013 and for Sunday it was off to my first muskie meeting of the year but sadly that wasn’t going to happen.

When I came back into my office, expecting to check my email and start browsing for all things fishing all I got was a computer that wouldn’t stop rebooting, most frustrating.

I work at home and need my computer for my business so Instead of having a fun weekend I ended up looking for another computer rather than going to my first muskie meeting.

This desktop computer lasted me about 4 years which I think is pretty good as it goes pretty much 24/7. This time around I’m thinking we would all be happier with a desktop computer for my home office and maybe a laptop or notebook for the family room.

It seems far less things get installed on my computer when I’m the only one who uses it. Now maybe the family will stay in the family room and out of my office.

So I survived that weekend although my stress level was pretty high, My wallet is a whole lot lighter and now fits in my back pocket without making me look like I’m leaning sideways.

Now I just need to figure out how to get all my info from the old computer.

I was 47 when I finally learned to play acoustic guitar. It’s now been more than a decade since I started playing and I still play every single day. It’s something I love to do and even my poor health doesn’t stop me.

I tried learning 40 years ago but that just didn’t work for me and I gave up even trying, for the next 30 years.

Long story short we traded with each other and my life go so much more interesting. Now I had a brand new Yamaha acoustic guitar.

Once Jason and Gary learned I had a guitar they invited me to their guitar jams. The perfect opportunity for me to learn by example. I would go over to their house and I would trade computer know-how for some guitar know-how.

Become A Work From Home Guitar Instructor

In the time I’ve been playing guitar now I have met so many others who want to learn so I would point them to my new friends, depending on what type of music these people like. The rockers I sent to Jason and the country/folk/bluegrass people I sent to Gary.

Teaching others how to play guitar is certainly a great work from home job and can help with those ever increasing bills we get each month.

When I first quit my day job to work from home I was a web designer, graphic designer and computer instructor. So the logical thing for me to do was to get into web design.

My first small business client I had was a bear and moose hunting team who wanted to start a bear hunting outfitters here in New Brunswick. It only took me about a day to do their entire site and I made a few hundred doing it.

Next I had a couple of friends over who wanted me to teach them a few things and brought a poet with them. My two friends never did get anywhere with what they had in mind but their friend hired me to build his website.

Back then it wasn’t easy building websites with the available software, which by the way was way too expensive. Today it’s a whole different story when it comes to website building.

I don’t just make websites and graphics for people but I also maintain their websites and get paid good money to add and update them. But there is more to it, if you want to earn a bit more income from the same people.

I also am an affiliate of GoDaddy.com so when my client needs a domain for their website I offer them my affiliate link. This way I make a little income when they purchase and also when they renew their domain each year.

Now once they have a domain and a website they need it to be hosted somewhere so that their site is online 24/7/365. For hosting I have a couple of accounts but my favourite hosting is HostGator.

My clients pay hosting each month, to me, so it’s a recurring payment and most of my clients use their Paypal account so it’s automatically paid to me each month.

Starting Locally Is The Best Move

I started locally here in Moncton and other than creating a few sites for friends I’ve made online more than 90% of my web design business is done with local businesses.

Starting a work from home business can turn your world upside down if you don’t take the time to learn what you should be doing.

I started my work at home business as a computer consultant back in 1987. As computers became more affordable to home owners I moved from consulting into work at home computer instructing and before long I had learned enough about web graphics and design to start a work from home website and graphic designer business.

However, when I decided to try my hand at online marketing I fell flat on my face and if it wasn’t for my wife working and my web design income I would have given up completely.

I’m definitely a man and with that comes the in-ability to ask for help or read instructions. So in order for me to make it as work from home business owner I had to suck it up and start asking for help so I could learn quicker and make more income with less mistakes.

Just because I am a computer instructor and website designer doesn’t mean I do all the work myself. I have those skills because I studied but my writing skills aren’t the best and is why I have a proof reader and copywriter I can turn to for tasks that I don’t have the skill for or the time for. Don’t be afraid to farm out the tasks that will take too much time.

Look For Jobs Locally

When I started my work from home website design business I started locally with a few free sites for friends who have businesses and from there word of mouth provided me with more work than I could handle at the time.

It’s important to advertise your business and even to have business cards because not everyone makes it on word of mouth like I did. Always have business cards on your person. You’d be surprised how many opportunities fail because the owner didn’t advertise at every opportunity.

Getting the word out is key to your work at home success.

Do Something You Know

Don’t start a work from home business about something new to you, just because you heard you can make money with it. That’s a recipe for failure if I ever saw one. I tried online marketing which was definitely something I didn’t know and spent the next year trying to figure it out.

All that saved my sorry ass was my web and graphic design skills.

Today I do market online but it’s in niches that are built around my interest and hobbies which I know about. I am also part of my target group which makes it easier to focus my marketing efforts so I make more money.

Today I tell people who talk to me about working from home that they should go with something they love so they will stick with it longer and are less likely to give up because they don’t know their niche.

Get Yourself A Smart-Phone

Having a phone specifically for your online business is a good move on your part. This way it’s only you that answers the phone and because this is your business phone you only use it for your business and you don’t let anyone else use it or answer it, unless they are part of your business of course.

Have Your Own Business Website

Make certain you have a business website and that it’s updated regularly. Your business website needs to be on your business card as well. If you don’t have the skills required for making your own business website hire someone to do it for you.

I have a couple of friends who tried creating their own business cards and website and lacked the skills. The end result looked far from professional and then they wondered why they don’t get any business, from other than close family and friends.

In conclusion I would just say that time invested in making your work from home business look professional is time well spent.

As a work at home online marketer with a decade of marketing under my belt I no longer work just one website. Heck I don’t even limit myself to a single site per niche any more and have as many as 4 blogs per niche and at this moment I am working in 7 different niches.

There was a time it wasn’t necessary but today every single site I own gets unique content at least once a week. The thing is I no longer write each article individually.
